SO HEAVY!

There are a lot of things to like about this mixer. It's pretty cool-looking; the shiny red goes well in my kitchen. It's powerful, too. I've noticed some slowing or indications that it's struggling when I mix large batches of heavy cookie dough, but in general it doesn't have any real performance problems (other than the slight ones I'll mention in a minute).

But oh, man, it is so heavy. I'm not the strongest girl in the world, but I'm not a weakling, either; I carry heavy things, open jars, haul around cast-iron pots full of stew, and hand-knead my own bread regularly without a problem. But even just using this mixer for the five minutes or so needed to properly cream butter and sugar leaves my right hand and forearm *aching*. Sometimes I have to stop and take breaks. This may not be--probably isn't--a big deal if you only use it occasionally, but I use mine at least once a week, so it gets to be a struggle. Over the holiday I made about nine different kinds of cookies, and after the first five (over several days) my arm was sore for a long time. Seriously, weight-lifters could train using this thing.

And it's not just the weight; the design of it is a bit unwieldy, too, which adds to the problem.

In addition, flour and icing sugar stick to/coat the vent at the top, which is unfortunately placed right where flour etc. tend to be flying around--just above the beaters. It's rather unsightly, though not a huge deal. The only other real issue is that I'm having trouble now changing the power setting--often I hit the + or - button to no effect, and have to use my free hand to prod the button over and over until it finally changes.

However, I believe that's partly due to my very heavy use of this mixer. I've had mine about a year, and as I said have used it at least once a week since then--sometimes more--so that's a lot of use. It certainly shows that if you can get past the weight of the thing, it's an excellent value for money. And as I said, it powers through mixing jobs that my old, much lighter mixer just can't handle.

So the weight is a downside, but this mixer is reliable and sturdy--perhaps it wouldn't be so good were it not so heavy, and so that's simply the trade-off that must be made--and for the price I can't imagine there being a better one available. It works hard, and with it I have made lovely light cakes, cookies, frostings, meringues--you name it, this mixer has done it.

Overall I definitely recommend it, but do be aware that it's very heavy. People with arthritis or joint troubles, or who simply do not have a lot of arm/wrist/hand strength, should probably look elsewhere. For everyone else, although this mixer requires some stamina and strength to use, for the money it is a great bargain, and it's definitely worth the price.

I bought this Hand Mixer earlie this week. It looks great, handled well and is well balanced and sturdy, these were my initial impressions. I was making my Christmas cake. It has 8 speeds + a Turbo boost. I put the ingredients into the bowl and turned the mixer on and it was so fast I struggled to keep the mixure in the bowl. I turned the speed down to 1 and it was still much too fast for a flour mixer. It you mainly blend liquids / eggs etc, this will be just fine and very quick, for baking I would not reccommend it. It is a shame because I think it looks great and the balance of the machine was great too. I will be returning it to Dunhelm later.
